The Qatar Germany 2017 Year of Culture will officially launch next month, Mohammed Nasser Al Othman, Director of Public and International Relations Department at Qatar Museums (QM), announced yesterday.

“The Qatar Germany Year of Culture will be officially launched early next month at Katara Opera House. The opening night will feature performances of Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra along with famous German musicians,” said Othman at yesterday's press event at the Museum of Islamic Art.

The year-long programme will include a variety of activities, exhibitions, festivals and performances that will highlight the unique aspects of Qatar and Germany, as well as the common interests of their citizens, he added. On its sixth year, the Year of Culture programme is designed to strengthen existing ties between Qatar and other countries through mutual exchanges of arts, culture, heritage and sport.

“The programme aims to activate the role of culture and the arts and creativity, to build bridges of communication between the State of Qatar and other peoples of the world through a variety of exhibitions, festivals, competitions and events held throughout the year,” stressed Othman.

We hope that this year's programme between Qatar and Germany will be as excellent and distinguished as last year,” he added.

The recent Year of Culture was marked by more than 30 events and activities held in Qatar and China such as major exhibitions including Treasures of China held at the Museum of Islamic Art, the Pearls: Jewels from the Sea at the National Museum of China, What about the Art?: Contemporary Art from China at QM Gallery Al Riwaq and the Silks from the Silk Road at QM Gallery in Katara.

“Qatar Museums has succeeded through Years of Culture in promoting the exchange of ideas with other parts of the world,” he said.
