We can't believe the festive season is already upon us - and that means New Year's Eve is just around the corner too.

And while there are plenty of parties and events across the UK to welcome in 2018 in style, if you're after something extra special then a European city break could be just the ticket.

There are plenty of amazing hotspots where you can soak up local culture thanks to the unique local celebrations, not to mention the main squares and local haunts where revellers unite every year.

And the good news is that considering it's one of the biggest nights of the year, there are still hotels that come in at cheaper rates than you would expect - and they still have rooms going now.

We take a look at the European cities that should be on your radar.

We've also teamed up with TripAdvisor for their top picks of the best value hotels for the New Year's Eve weekend, all bookable via their website and with a minimum of a 3-bubble rating.

If you can face the crowds of revellers, then head to the city's Puerta del Sol on New Year's Eve to fully immerse yourself in the celebrations.

Most notable is the tradition of the 12 grapes, where you eat one at each gong at midnight - the idea is that if you can manage it, you'll be rewarded with good luck for the year ahead.

Away from the main square, Madrid's nightlife won't disappoint. There are plenty of street parties, huge clubs and restaurants and bars open until the late hours so you can see a whole different side to the city.

If it's parties you're after, Budapest won't disappoint. There are plenty of boat parties taking place on the Danube (although these can sometimes be pretty expensive), while the thermal spas play host to a wide array of club nights.

Most tickets sell out around this time of year though so if you are planning a trip, now's the time to decide what you want to do on the night.
