A FIFTH performance of The Magic Flute has been added to next year’s Adelaide Festival to meet record-breaking demand for tickets.

The Mozart opera production, by Komische Oper Berlin director Barrie Kosky and UK theatre group 1927, melds live performance with silent film-style animated projections and has already played to more than half a million people around the world.

More than 3000 tickets have been sold in the past two weeks, 38 per cent higher than Saul (also directed by Kosky) in 2017 and 63 per cent up on this year’s opera production of Hamlet.

Interstate buyers have accounted for more than 30 per cent of the sales to date.

“Wow! We knew Australian audiences would be excited about The Magic Flute’s inclusion in the 2019 Adelaide Festival and the chance to see this landmark work, but we did not expect to be announcing a fifth show so soon,’’ Festival artistic directors Rachel Healy and Neil Armfield said.

“Kosky’s Saul sold out very fast and many people were devastated about missing out — it’s clear that audiences aren’t going to risk that a second time ’round.”

The extra performance of The Magic Flute will be on Sunday, March 3 at 7pm, with tickets on sale now at BASS or adelaidefestival.com.au
