Sun Valley Opera

Sun Valley Opera is planning a simulcast of “La Rondine” at Magic Lantern Cinemas Saturday, April 20.

Sun Valley Opera will bring one of Giacomo Puccini’s lesser known works, “La Rondine,” to the screen at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 20, at Magic Lantern Cinemas in Ketchum.

“It’s lesser known due to its timing,” said Robyn Watson, executive director of Sun Valley Opera. “The world premiere was in Monte Carlo in 1917 because Italy and Austria were enemies during World War I. This version is set in the 1920s and features lots of dancing and a lighter tone showing three different aspects of French life during that time.”

The opera is a bittersweet love story featuring a French courtesan who falls in love with a young man who can give her a different life away from riches. The tale moves from Paris, with has a glamorous nightlife, to the picturesque French Riviera, according to the Metropolitan Opera.
