Lucy Worsley narrates this fascinating film on the lady with the lamp, a woman who embodies the qualities of selflessness, care and service that define the nursing profession. Nightingale worked tirelessly all her life and also held no truck with notions of what women should and shouldn't do. Yet her contributions to nursing are only a small part of what she did. It's this perspective which Worsley brings to the fore, presenting a detailed picture of all the aspects that made Nightingale a pioneer - as a nurse, a teacher, a social reformer, statistician and more.

We also learn more about the woman herself, and what motivated her to leave her wealthy and comfortable life in London for the battlefields of Crimea, and the personal price she paid for a life dedicated to the service of others.

It's punctuated with dramatic reconstructions and we also hear Nightingale's own words, from letters and diaries, and a raft of experts are on hand to provide context and colour. A splendid documentary on a formidable woman, a hero who helped to shape the modern world. (71 minutes)
