Paris may be one of Europe's most popular city destinations, but the sheer number of tourists descending on the city mean it can be a challenge for both locals and visitors to get around. Thankfully, France isn't short of brilliant city destinations to rival their capital - with some just a short journey from the UK.

From the swanky beachfronts of Saint-Tropez and Cannes to the renowned cities of Nice and Marseille, visitors are spoilt for choice. However, one well-versed traveller has shone a light on a French city well worth visiting. Lille, on the Northern French border with Belgium, is not just easily accessible from London, it's also been named as one of Europe's cheapest city breaks in a list published by the Post Office.

Speaking with Lonely Planet, travel expert Tom Stainer shared that he's ditched Paris in favour of the "beautiful yet underrated" spot. He said: "The journey from London to Lille is a cinch as it only takes 1.5 hours on the Eurostar (far quicker than to Paris), and you alight right in the city centre at Gare Lille-Europe (no need to fuss with a metro journey afterwards)."

Lille, the administrative heart of Nord département and the prime city of the Hauts-de-France région, offers a buzzing hub perfect for those seeking a city break, according to the Express. The best times of the year for a Lille getaway are May and September, avoiding the high season but taking advantage of the pleasant weather. However, there's plenty to do in the city all year round.

The city is brimming with centuries-old landmarks, architectural treasures, and top-notch museums, all easy to explore on foot. Dylan, the founder and blogger behind Shoot From the Trip, shared insights from his December jaunt to Lille, highlighting Place du Théâtre as a must-visit.

This expansive square sits at the heart of the city and boasts an array of impressive buildings, including the Opera House. He pointed out that it's a "great choice" for accommodation, remarking: "At less than 15 minutes walk from the International terminal and even less to Gare de Lille Flanders (the main railway station), you really do not need to worry about transport in this city for a short break. Most attractions are within walking distance if you're willing to walk for a maximum of twenty minutes."

When it comes to Lille's most famous sights, Vieux Lille, the historic part of the city, claims the top spot according to Tripadvisor, and is arguably the area's most stunning area. The majestic Grand Place square is just a stone's throw away and serves as a perfect spot for people-watching, hosting a variety of events throughout the year, including dance classes in the summertime.

Lille's city centre may be relatively compact, but it's nonetheless packed with exquisite architecture. The Flemish influence is unmistakable amidst the classic French aesthetic, thanks to the city's proximity to Belgium.

Place du General de Gaulle, also known as Grand Place, is home to a large monument that becomes the centrepiece of the city's Christmas festivities, complete with a towering Christmas tree and a 50-metre Ferris wheel erected for the winter season. Each year, Lille hosts a renowned Christmas market in Place Rihour, a quaint square just off Grand Place. With 90 chalets offering Christmas gifts, food, and drink, it's a must-visit for those who love the festive season.

Art enthusiasts can explore Lille's Palais des Beaux-Arts, one of France's most esteemed art galleries, featuring works by Donatello and Goya. For a more unconventional art experience, head to the suburb of Roubaix and visit Musee La Piscine, where stunning artworks are displayed in a former Art Deco swimming pool building.

When it comes to local cuisine, the northern French city has several specialities worth sampling. Try the savoury tarte au Maroilles, a quiche made with creme fraiche, butter, salt, pepper, and eggs. For a sweet treat, opt for a gaufre a la vergeoise, a sugar waffle filled with a sweet filling, available throughout Lille.

Based on Google reviews, top-rated French restaurants across the city include Rouge Barre, Restaurant PURETÉ, Restaurant Sébastopol, and Autour de Vous Lille.
