Luxembourg
SMALL STATES GAMES – Luxembourg has made an impressive start on the opening day of competitions at the Games of the Small States in Andorra, securing a total of 28 medals – 10 gold, seven silver, and 11 bronze. This strong performance places the Grand Duchy in second position on the medal table, just behind Cyprus. Highlights in the medal table include gold medals for Charel Gaspar in the high jump, Ralph Daleiden Ciuferri in the 100m freestyle swimming, Jenny Warling took in the karate final, and Marie Schreiber in the cycling time trial event. CLIMATE PROTECTION – Luxembourgers support climate protection measures but are unwilling to pay for them. According to a survey conducted by the Luxembourg Climate Observatory (OPC), 89% of Luxembourg's citizens consider climate and environmental issues important, and 83% believe that climate change must be stopped. However, 60% also believe that such measures should not incur any personal cost. Experts say that many lack the financial means to do so and feel it is up to the government to create conditions that make sustainable choices the easier, more accessible option.
ANTI-DEFORESTATION LAW – Luxembourg's Agriculture Minister Martine Hansen has called on the EU to ease anti-deforestation rules for low-risk countries – like Luxembourg – warning that the current regulation imposes unworkable burdens on European farmers. The European Union's new anti-deforestation regulation, which requires companies importing products like coffee or timber to trace their origins using geolocation and satellite data, is currently set to come into effect at the end of 2025.

UKRAINE WAR – Russian authorities say they have repelled almost 150 Ukrainian drones overnight, in a major attack that forced at least three Moscow airports to suspend flights. The overnight swarm comes after Ukraine said it faced the most intense three days of Russian drone attacks since Moscow launched its military offensive in 2022.
Ukrainian President Zelensky is visiting Germany today and meeting Chancellor Friedrich Merz for the first time since he took office. Earlier in the week, Merz announced that Germany would lift previous range restrictions on weapons supplied to Kyiv.
US INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS – The Trump administration has continued its crackdown on American universities by ordering US embassies worldwide to immediately stop scheduling visa interviews for foreign students. The directive comes as the government prepares to implement comprehensive social media screening for all international applicants and after the president's assault on Harvard that followed pro-Palestinian campus demonstrations last year.
SPACE TRAVEL – SpaceX' prototype Starship exploded over the Indian Ocean on Tuesday, capping another bumpy test flight for the rocket central to billionaire Elon Musk's dream of colonising Mars. The biggest and most powerful launch vehicle ever built lifted off around 6.36pm from the company's Starbase facility, near a southern Texas village that earlier this month voted to become a city – also named Starbase.
GLOBAL WARMING – The United Nations is warning there is now a 70% chance that average warming from 2025 to 2029 will exceed the 1.5°C international benchmark. The planet is expected to remain at historic levels of warming after the two hottest years ever recorded in 2023 and 2024, according to an annual climate report compiled by Britain's Met Office for the UN's World Meteorological Organization.
FRANCE SEX ABUSE TRIAL – A court in France is expected to deliver a verdict today in the trial of former surgeon Joel Le Scouarnec, accused of raping or sexually assaulting nearly 300 patients, many of them children. Prosecutors have requested a 20-year prison sentence.

FOOTBALL – Tonight sees the national cup final at the Stade de Luxembourg – Differdange and Dudelange will face each other. Today is also the final in the UEFA Conference League, with a game between Real Betis and Chelsea. The game will be played tonight at 9pm in Wroclaw, Poland.
BASKETBALL – Tyrese Haliburton delivered his second career playoff triple double to power Indiana over New York 130-121, lifting the Pacers one win from the NBA Finals. The Pacers last made the NBA Finals in 2000 and have never won the NBA title.
TENNIS – Novak Djokovic has made a clinical start to his latest pursuit of a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title at the French Open, while women's contenders Coco Gauff and Mirra Andreeva successfully got their campaigns under way at a windy Roland Garros.
CYCLING – Christian Scaroni has won stage 16 of the Giro d'Italia while Isaac Del Toro wobbled but clung on to first overall as several contenders fell or faltered on a crash-filled day in the Alps. Today brings a 155km run from San Michele all'Adige to Bormio that organisers rate three out of five for difficulty.
Weather
It's going to be a rough one today, especially after the relatively recent patch of good weather we had. We're expected to have moderate to heavy rain throughout the day. We might even have to deal with a bit of a storm later on – with wind gusts of 65km/h. The temperature is still not bad, though: 11–13°C minimum, going up to 17–19°C at its peak.
