Schedule Friday afternoon at World Cup of Darts 2025 including Australia, United States and debuting Argentina
Jonas Hunold/PDC Europe

The 2025 World Cup of Darts continues on Friday afternoon with the second round of group stage matches in Frankfurt. The teams that lost on Thursday evening return to the oche for what is now a last-chance encounter. Each will face the third nation in their group as they fight to keep their hopes of reaching the last 16 alive.

The tournament features 40 pairs, each representing their country. Since 2023, all matches at the World Cup have been played exclusively as pairs matches — a format that has delivered plenty of drama and surprise results in recent editions.

Of the 40 participating nations, the four top seeds — England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland — are automatically through to the last 16. The remaining 36 countries must battle through the group stage for a spot in the knockout rounds. The teams are divided into twelve groups of three, with only the group winners progressing to the next stage.

Friday marks the tournament debut for former champions Damon Heta and Simon Whitlock. The Australian pair face Spain’s Daniel Zapata and Ricardo Fernández. Elsewhere, there will be a historic moment as Argentina make their first-ever appearance at the World Cup of Darts. Jesús Salate and Víctor Guillín take on Finland’s Teemu Harju and Marko Kantele.

Veteran Paul Lim also returns to the stage on Friday afternoon. He partners Phuay Wei Tan for Singapore as they take on José de Sousa and Bruno Nascimento of Portugal. Other countries in action include France, Croatia, Canada, Italy, and Gibraltar.

The Netherlands will not return to action until Friday evening, but there will still be two Dutch-born players involved in the afternoon session. Jules van Dongen, who lost alongside Danny Lauby in their opener against Hong Kong, now faces Bahrain in a must-win match. Norway, featuring Cor Dekker, begin their tournament against the South African duo of Cameron Carolissen and Devon Petersen.

Format World Cup of Darts

All matches in the World Cup of Darts are played as pairs. In the group stage, the format is best-of-seven legs — the first team to win four legs takes the victory.

Once the tournament reaches the knockout stage, the format changes. In the second round, quarter-finals, and semi-finals, teams must win eight legs to progress. The final raises the bar even further: the title will only be secured by the first team to reach ten legs.

Prize money at the World Cup of Darts

A total prize fund of £450,000 is on offer throughout the tournament. Teams eliminated in the group stage will each receive at least £2,000 per player. For players from the top four seeded nations, the guaranteed minimum is significantly higher — each is assured £9,000 regardless of their results.

The big money starts to come into play from the quarter-finals onwards. Teams reaching that stage earn £10,000 per player, with semi-finalists banking £15,000 each. The runners-up walk away with £25,000 apiece, while the winners will take home an impressive £40,000 per player. Prize money does not count towards the PDC Order of Merit, as the World Cup of Darts is a non-ranking event.

Former Bears WR accuses team of suppressing his talent

A former wide receiver for the Chicago Bears accused the team of suppressing his talent during his time in Chicago. In 2022, the Bears traded what became the No. 32 pick in the 2023 draft to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for Chase Claypool. General manager Ryan Poles overpaid for Claypool, hoping to give Justin Fields some help on an otherwise barren receiver corps. He appeared in 10 games and started in five during his two years in Chicago, recording 18 receptions for 191 yards and one touchdown. Claypool took a shot at the coaching staff in 2023 when he admitted that he didn’t think the staff was putting him in a position to succeed. Soon after the comment, the Bears traded Claypool to the Miami Dolphins, where he caught four passes for 26 yards in nine games. Claypool was released with an injury settlement from the Buffalo Bills in August last year for a toe injury and hasn’t been in the NFL since. Did the Chicago Bears suppress Chase Claypool? Per a post on his Instagram on Friday, Claypool made it known he intends to return to the league and said he felt like he was “suppressed” during the last two years. “I am back to being the strongest and fastest I’ve ever been and couldn’t be more excited to step back out on the field and let my actions speak for themselves,” Claypool wrote. “I deeply and truly believe that the pieces will align, and I will work my way into the position to show off what’s been suppressed these last two years.” Claypool played for the Dolphins and Bears in the last two years, and the wide receiver appeared to take a shot at both organizations. Claypool was frustrated by the injury he suffered last year, believing that he had a good thing going for him with the Bills. “My first season-ending injury in 18 years came at the worst possible time,” Claypool wrote. “I felt like God was playing a joke on me… Signing with Buffalo was the best thing that could’ve ever happened to me. I was the strongest, fastest, and most prepared I had ever been. “I was playing my best football — working my way up from LAST (14th) string to taking first-team reps by camp. Most of all, I was doing it with a group of guys I truly appreciated.” Claypool thanked Bills quarterback Josh Allen and members of head coach Sean McDermott’s staff for their support and for checking in on him last year. Maybe the Bills will take a chance on Claypool before training camp this year. But there appears to be no love between Claypool and the Bears at this time, per the post.

Maple Leafs Forward Announces Life-Changing News After Filing for Arbitration

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Nicolas Robertson, who has officially filed for salary arbitration, recently made a life-changing announcement. There were a handful of NHL players who have filed for salary arbitration in recent days, among them being Toronto Maple Leafs forward Nicolas Robertson. Other players that have also filed include Morgan Barron, Dylan Samberg and Gabriel Vilardi of the Winnipeg Jets, Kaapo Kakko of the Seattle Kraken, Lukas Dostal and Drew Helleson of the Anaheim Ducks, Arvid Soderblom of the Chicago Blackhawks, Jayden Struble of the Montreal Canadiens, Maksim Tsyplakov of the New York Islanders, and Conor Timmins with the Buffalo Sabres. Robertson has also announced a life-changing update, getting married to his longtime girlfriend, Emma. It was a rare update that Robertson has given about his personal life, which he said last year during an interview that he prefers to keep more private. Probably because of being in Toronto, I stay away from (social media). I could post more stuff, but my life is kind of boring, and that's how I like it. Robertson, who was taken with the 53rd pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft by the Maple Leafs, played in 69 games this year and had 22 points (15G, 7A). He's played in 156 career NHL games, all with Toronto, and has 56 points (32G, 24A). All NHL salary arbitration hearings are set to take place from July 20 through August 4, while the players who filed can still negotiate for a new contract with their teams. If the independent arbiter awards the player a deal worth an AAV (average annual value) of over $4.85 million, the team can decide to cut ties with the player, who would become a UFA.

Steelers Already Have Minkah Fitzpatrick Replacement

Did the Pittsburgh Steelers improve following their blockbuster trade? The organization and the Miami Dolphins swapped star secondary players, and the Steelers now have Jalen Ramsey and Jonnu Smith on their roster. Former All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick is now a member of the Dolphins. If you ask former NFL player and current analyst Will Blackmon, the Steelers certainly improved this offseason. In addition to upgrading multiple positions, the Fitzpatrick trade was another win for the organization. Especially when they have veteran Juan Thornhill now in the mix. Speaking on FS1's The Facility, Blackmon shared his outlook on the upcoming season. "I'm going to give you another name: Juan Thornhill, the safety that they got," he said. "He has 74 starts, is a two-time Super Bowl champion. So, you lose Minkah, but you got a leader back there who knows exactly what to do, who knows exactly what it takes to win championships." Blackmon is very high on Thornhill, and it mostly had to do with his history of winning. The 29-year-old is a two-time Super Bowl champion with the Kansas City Chiefs, winning the Lombardi twice in the first four years of his NFL career. Blackmon believes that the changes the organization has made will help end its almost decade-long playoff win drought. "I think, wholeheartedly, they got better." he said. "They got in a situation where they're gonna compete, they're gonna compete. I got them actually winning a playoff game this year and ending that drought." The big question facing Thornhill is can he bounce back? After an excellent start to his career, his production has declined over the last two years. Since joining the Cleveland Browns in 2023, he's gone from a top safety to one on the decline. Now with the Steelers, he is trying to re-establish himself as one of the best secondary players in the league. The other huge question is, can he stay healthy? He's been limited to 11 games in each of the past two seasons. He joins Pittsburgh fully healthy and with a gigantic opportunity in front of him. If he can fill the void left by Fitzpatrick, he could return to being elite and help the Steelers go on a deep playoff run.

Minnesota Twins sale Report: Pohlads 'have a deal on the table'

The Minnesota Twins reportedly have a "deal on the table" in the ongoing franchise sale saga, according to longtime St. Paul Pioneer Press sports reporter Charlie Walters. "Industry sources say the Twins, who began exploring a sale last October and have sought $1.7 billion for the team, have a deal on the table and that bidding to line up financing is underway," Walters reports. Walters simply says there's a deal, which presumably means the Pohlads, who have owned the franchise since 1984, are happy with the alleged offer. Before Walters' report, the most recent noteworthy update suggested the Pohlads' pursuit of finding a buyer was gaining steam, though a formal offer hadn't been submitted. Walters has previously reported that the Pohlads have lowered the asking price from $1.7 billion to $1.5 billion. A sticking point in the process has been the Twins' debt, which has been reported to be around $400 million. Walters is now reporting that Major League Baseball is "expected to guarantee the Twins' debt," which could help move the sale along. We'll see what happens, but this is, at the least, a sign of momentum for the Twins. Twins news, rumors and analysis
