PENNSYLVANIA (WOLF) — The Pennsylvania Turnpike is advising drivers of a weekend closure in order to demolish more tollbooths along the Northeast Extension.
According to the PA Turnpike, traffic restrictions on Interstate 476 are scheduled to begin on Sunday, June 5, as part of the tollbooth demolition process for Open Road Tolling (ORT).
To allow crews to safely remove legacy tolling equipment, tollbooths and canopies, traffic at the Wyoming Valley Toll Plaza (Milepost A-112) will be reduced a single lane in each direction and intermittent lane closures will also occur at the Keyser Avenue Toll Plaza (Milepost A-121).
Open Road Tolling is a cashless, free-flowing mode of collecting tolls without traditional toll plazas or toll booths. In an ORT system, tolls are charged electronically as customers drive at highway speeds without slowing down or stopping beneath overhead structures — called "gantries" — located between interchanges.
The tollbooths at the Pocono Interchange have also been demolished.
Motorists should expect travel delays and are encouraged to plan travel accordingly. Work schedules are subject to change based on weather conditions.
