      Governors from Vermont and New York have agreed to convene with Canadian premiers and other state leaders from the northeastern United States amid ongoing federal trade tensions. The meeting, led by Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey, was scheduled to take place in Boston on Monday morning. Governors from New York, Vermont, Maine, Connecticut and Rhode Island are expected to participate alongside seven Canadian premiers. Leaders from New York and Vermont have publicly opposed tariffs announced by the Trump administration, particularly the tariffs against Canada. "It's no secret that Canada is an important trading partner to the United States, and especially to us here in Vermont," said Gov. Phil Scott. "I don't think increasing tariffs on them, in particular, was a good idea."New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said her state has a $50 billion trade relationship with Canada, which has been strained since new tariffs took effect. "They’re devastating to the small businesses, family farms and local manufacturers," Hochul said. "It’s more important than ever that governors work together to protect their states from these costs, which is why I’m working with Gov. Healey and our colleagues across the nation on a path forward that helps our economy."The bipartisan group convened to discuss the impacts of President Donald Trump’s tariffs and how American and Canadian leaders can continue to work together to maintain strong trade relations that benefit local businesses and residents.
