Photos & Video: Bermuda At Opening Ceremony

Bermuda’s travelling party of more than 60 athletes received the warmest of Orkney welcomes at the International Island Games opening ceremony today [July 12].

Held inside a pack Bignold Park in Kirkwall, Bermuda’s team looked resplendent in their eye-catching pink shirts, referencing the island’s unique natural attributes such as the blue water and pink sand.

Koa Goodchild, who plays for the women’s football team, carried the island’s flag during the athletes’ parade; meanwhile lawn bowls player David Leach performed the water-carrying duties during the water ceremony, involving the symbolic mixing of waters, the Island Games equivalent of lighting the Olympic flame.

The athletes then proudly marched through an atmospheric Kirkwall, the largest town on the archipelago, much to the delight of the locals lining the noisy streets.

The Games get underway tomorrow with Megan Berry competing in the women’s triathlon, the men’s under-23 football team facing the Western Isles, and the women’s national football team playing Jersey.
