That's it for today's blog

Thanks for joining us. We will have more coverage of the royal tour later today and tomorrow when they head to Dubbo.

I'll leave you with our bumper gallery, and (in my opinion) the photo of the day.

One last event before heading to Dubbo

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have one last public engagement today before they head to Dubbo on Wednesday.

The pair will end their day as they started it, at Admiralty House, where Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove will host a reception attended by Australians from charity and community, business, arts and sports industries.

Meghan and Harry will fly to Dubbo on Wednesday morning for another day packed with official engagements.

They will then fly to Melbourne on Thursday, but will be back in Sydney for Friday - so if you missed them today, there's still a chance of spotting them.

Busy day for the Duke and Duchess

It's been a whirlwind day of public engagements for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle with plenty of photo ops, so here's a recap of what's happened so far:

  • Harry and Meghan started the day at Admiralty House, where they received their first baby gifts: a pair of Ugg boots and a toy kangaroo
  • They then travelled to Taronga Zoo where they opened the new Institute of Science and Learning before meeting koalas
  • The royal pair caught a ferry to the Opera House, where they watched a Bangarra Dance Company rehearsal
  • They then met the public, including 98-year-old Daphne Dunne.

We have plenty of photos, which you can see in our gallery here.

And then again last year:

And now for the third time, and she has also met Meghan.

Photos of Harry and Meghan meeting the public

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been whisked away, but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy the photos of the royal pair meeting the public. Here are some of our favourites so far:

While the crowd was modest earlier in the day, numbers swelled ahead of the Duke and Duchess' public appearance.

When Harry met Daphne, again

Harry and Meghan have met Daphne Dunne.

The 98-year-old received a hug from the prince, whom she has met twice before.

Mrs Dunne asked Harry to call Meghan over so she could meet his new wife, and Meghan held Mrs Dunne’s hands as they had a chat.

Harry said: "Very, very nice to see you again...thank you for coming again," when he talked to the war widow.

Mrs Dunne said it was "marvellous" to meet the pair.

Meghan told Mrs Dunne: "We’ll have a little one when we see you next time".

I'm not crying, you're crying.

Flashback to Princess Diana's Australian tour

For something slightly different, here's an article first published in 1985 about Princess Diana and Prince Charles' tour of Australia:

It is a curious scale of priorities. This pretty and charming young woman has not spoken out on atrocities in South Africa; and on a local level, she has not threatened to bring Victoria’s train services to a halt. Yet this week she has had no difficulty in sharing the headlines with those whose views have a more momentous effect on our lives and on world affairs. All she has to do is feel poorly, get bitten or giggle. Sometimes all she had to do wear a dress.

You can read the fascinating article - which has plenty of modern parallels - here.

Harry and Meghan meet the public

Harry and Meghan are walking about, meeting members of the public who have been waiting all morning for a glimpse of the royal couple.

Meghan accepted small toys and a large, purple card from children at the Opera House forecourt, as they were followed by dignitaries including NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian.

Meghan donned a trench coat to protect against the wind, and the crowd cheered on their arrival.

Premier says it was an 'honour' to have royal couple at Taronga Zoo

While we wait for the Duke and Duchess to appear outside the Opera House, let's go to comments from the NSW Premier thanking the couple for opening the Taronga Institute of Science and Learning.

“It is an absolute honour to have Their Royal Highnesses officially open the new Taronga Institute as strong advocates for conservation,” Ms Berejiklian said.

The premier said she was "delighted" to welcome Meghan and Harry to Sydney and show them around.

“The Duke and Duchess were very excited to meet the koala joeys and expressed their deep gratitude to the people of NSW for such a truly Australian gift," she said.

We've got plenty of photos of that koala meeting in our gallery - go check them out.

Sydney waits for royal appearance

By Helen Pitt

Helicopters are hovering over the Opera House awaiting the royal couple who are touring the building, which this week celebrates its 45th year since opening.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian is waiting for them at the foot of the steps on the Western Boardwalk, along with an enthusiastic crowd.

Crowds are lining the steps on the Tarpeian Way in the Royal Botanic Gardens for a Birdseye view of the royal couple.
