JAZZ: Winter Jazz Fest Trnava 2018, Malý Berlín Cultural Centre, Štefánikova 4, Trnava, March 9, 19:00.

The 3rd year of a one-day winter festival of jazz in “the oldest free royal town”, i.e. Trnava, brings to local audiences and visitors headliner Hungarian-based band Djabe with multi award-winning band members. WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL: Hudba sveta Žilina (Music of the World Žilina), City Theatre Žilina (March 15), Stanica Žilina Záriečie (March 16), House of Unions (April 17), Žilina.

Hudba sveta Žilina is a three-day festival of innovative, modern world music, offering bands such as the mostly female Czech band BraAgas and, as headliner, international troupe Flaco de Nerja Flamenco Ensemble (ES, SK, RS, AT) who combines traditional and modern flamenco. Flaco, aka Branislav Krajčo, comes from Bratislava but has gained a reputation also in Spain. The next day, Hungarian Cimbaliband – a vivid, unrestrained cosmopolitan band merging various genres and styles – and Slovak band Rusín Čendeš Orchestra, specialising in fusion of Ruthenian, Balkan, Jewish, and Roma music with jazz and other genres, will play. In April, local Balkansambel and Rozsutec folklore ensemble will open for renowned Romanian band Fanfare Ciocarlia. Admission: €8 (one day), €20 (festival pass). The special concert of the Slovak Sinfonietta (ŠKO Žilina) will feature Indian conductor Debashish Chaudhuri, British sitar player Jonathan Mayer, and Czech Tomáš Reindl on tabla. P. I. Tchaikovsky’s iconic ballet will premiere in the State Theatre Košice (SDKE) as directed by renowned dancer/choreographer/director Vladimir Malakhov. Malakhov (born 1968 in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine) is a former principal dancer with the American Ballet Theatre, the artistic director of the Staatsballett Berlin (Berlin State Ballet) from its founding in 2004 until 2014, and the student of Peter Pestov, as well as former member of the Moscow Classical Ballet (as that company's youngest principal dancer), the Vienna State Opera Ballet, the National Ballet of Canada, and others.
