Classic 1027 launches campaign to support Gauteng Opera

MELROSE – Classic 1027 has donated R50 000 to the Gauteng Opera in order to prevent it from closing down.

Classic 1027 has launched a fundraising effort of the Gauteng Opera to prevent it from having to close down.

The opera, which has operated for 18 years, has faced serious financial strain and announced that it would have to close down on 6 March. However, when CEO of Classic 1027, Lyndon Johnstone, found out about the opera’s fate he decided to step in and donate R50 000.

The Gauteng Opera works to support opera singers and provide them with a platform. Over the years the organisation grew and began training singers who didn’t have any previous experience.

“It had unfortunately come to a point where we could not run anymore, we need about R250 000 a month to run, we pay for all the singers’ training and it just came to a point where we could not continue unless we have more funding,” said Arnold Cloete.

He added that when they released the notice that they would be closing down Classic 1027 came on board and people have rallied behind them to ensure the opera will be able to stay open. However, there needs to be more sustainable support in order to maintain itself.

“We really hope that people realise that this is important and we do need it in this country and actually start supporting. It’s not just about money, it’s about support, we need more support from people who just want to come to the theatre to watch.”

Johnstone said that Classic 1027 has a unique opportunity to showcase South African talent. “We just couldn’t sit by and allow them to close down so when I heard about it, I phoned some of our guys and said, ‘We need to do this’.”

Within a few days, Johnstone had arranged for the donation to be made and hopes this will encourage others to support the Gauteng Opera.

Johnstone echoes Cloete’s sentiments that supporting the opera doesn’t have to be about donations. He said that corporates could also get involved and hire the artists to perform at their functions and support their talent.
