Kendrick Lamar makes history with an unprecedented Pulitzer Prize win

Kendrick Lamar has just made history by becoming the first non-classical or jazz artist to win a Pulitzer Prize for music.

The 30-year-old Compton-spawned rapper—who made a surprise guest appearance at Coachella this past weekend—was awarded the honour for DAMN., which was universally praised as one of the greatest albums, hip-hop or otherwise, of 2017.

In the past Lamar has been on record saying that awards aren’t important to him, that attitude no doubt serving him well at the most recent Grammys where he was beat out for album of the year by Bruno Mars’s 24K Magic.

Having now won a Pulitzer, the odds are that, while most awards remain of little interest to Lamar, this one most definitely does. He joins such recent winners as opera composer Du Yun, Henry Threadgill, Julia Wolfe, and John Luther Adams—none of which are exactly household names when it comes to pop culture.

You can catch Lamar in Vancouver at Rogers Arena on May 4, as part of Top Dawg Entertainment’s The Championship Tour.
